2025 Jaseng Medical Academy Summer Internship Program

Discover how future global healthcare leaders explored integrative medicine through hands-on clinical training, lectures, and cultural exchange during Jaseng Medical Academy’s 2025 Summer Internship Program.

Program Introduction

From July 8 to July 19, 2025, Jaseng Medical Academy welcomed 11 aspiring next-generation healthcare students for our Summer Integrative Medicine Internship. This year's summer program brought together students from the United States, the United Kingdom, and UAE (Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences, MBRU).

Throughout the two weeks, participants engaged in an immersive blend of clinical shadowing, lectures, field visits, and creative team projects. In the second week, they were joined by Korean Medicine students from the "JS Leaders" group, which fostered even greater cultural and academic exchange.
With a diverse group of students and a wide range of experiences, this year's program offered a meaningful journey into the philosophy and real-world practice of integrative medicine.

In the following sections, we'll share some of the highlights and memorable moments from this internship.

Orientation & Welcoming

The internship started with a welcome and orientation sessions, where all participants were introduced to the upcoming schedule and received essential information about the program.
This was followed by a guided tour of Gangnam Jaseng Hospital of Korean Medicine, helping everyone get familiar with the clinical environment they would be experiencing over the next two weeks.

Core Lectures & Practical Workshops

Throughout their internship program, students attended a series of core lectures and hands-on workshops designed to introduce them to the principles of Korean Medicine and Integrative Medicine, as well as its clinical applications.
Lectures covered a wide range of topics, including the fundamentals of Korean Medicine, musculoskeletal, spinal-related disorders, herbal medicine, acupuncture, and the treatment approaches unique at here in Jaseng.

Students also took part in practical sessions, where they had opportunities to observe demonstration and engage directly with techniques such as Chuna Manual Therapy, and Pharmacopuncture (Acupuncture Injection Therapy).

The sessions encouraged active discussion, and students often shared their own perspectives compared those approaches to what they'd learned in their home countries and universities.

Clinical Shadowing & Real-World Experience

One of the most valuable aspects of the internship was the opportunity for students to directly observe patient care and clinical practice at Jaseng Hospital of Korean Medicine. Students joined clinical shadowing at both Gangnam and Jamsil Jaseng Hospital of Korean Medicine, where they observe from consultations to treatments with skilled physicians.+

Students were able to see firsthand how integrative medicine is practiced in real clinical setting
– from Acupuncture Pharmacopuncture and Chuna Manual Therapies to collaborative patient management.
Many found it "eye-opening" to witness the doctor – patient interactions, the unique treatment approaches, and the integration of evidence-based medicine with traditional techniques.

This real-world experience gave students deeper insight into the practical side of Korean Medicine and helped them understand how different healthcare systems and cultural backgrounds can shape better patient care.

Jaseng Facility Visits & Field Trips

To broaden students' perspectives beyond the hospital settings, students visited several key institutions, cultural sites related to Korean Medicine and General Health.
The itinerary included tours of the Jaseng Spine & Joint Research Institute, Jaseng Medi Bio Center, where students learned about ongoing research, innovative treatments, and the role of evidence-based practice in Korean Medicine.

In addition, the group explored Seoul's rich medical and cultural heritage with visits to the Seoul K-Medi Center and Folk Museum of Korea. These field trips provided an unique look at the history and development of traditional medicine, as well as its place in contemporary healthcare.
Through this visits, students gained a better understanding of the integration between research, clinical care, and cultural transition in Korea's approach to medicine.

Team Projects with JS Leaders

Collaboration and creativity were key themes during the second week of the program, especially as the group was joined by Korean Medicine students from the JS Leaders. Together, students formed teams and took on creative projects designed to deepen their understanding of Integrative Medicine.

Reflection & Closing

As the internship came to close, students reflected on the diverse experiences and new perspectives they had gained over the two weeks. many highlighted the hands-on clinical exposure, the opportunity to work and learn alongside peers from around the word, and the chance to dive deep into both the science and the culture of Korean Medicine.

The program concluded with a closing session, where certificates were awarded and students shared their thoughts and gratitude to each other. Several students reflected that "This internship not only expanded our medical knowledge, but also inspired us to consider new approaches to patient care and to value global collaboration in medicine.".
